LATEST NEWS ON HAITI

Signs of progress can be seen throughout Haiti after the devastating magnitude 7 earthquake, but the crisis is far from over.  Thanks to many  generous donors, the American Red Cross has received approximately $409 million dollars (as of April 6, 2010) in Haiti Relief.  To date, the American Red Cross as spent $111 million dollars for tarps, tents, shelter kits, clean drinking water, medical supplies, vaccines, and sent 2,100 units of blood to medical facilities in Haiti.

Throughout the next 3 to 5 years, the Red Cross will continue to help Haiti rebuild.  American Red Cross expects to spend $200 during the first year in immediate relief efforts, and $200 million for long-term recovery needs in areas of health and sanitation.

Larry and Phyllis Norman are Hoosier Hills Chapater Disaster Action Team members.  In June 2010, the couple went to Haiti on a missionary relief effort.  "Red Cross tents were everywhere in Haiti.  The people are resiliant," said Larry.  "But many children are still eating only one meal every other day and the heat is stifiling."

Phyllis states she observed many Red Cross vehicles and United Nations equipment.  "The UN has employed many Haitians to help rebuild roads and that is good for families and the community," says Phyllis.  "While many Haitians are still afraid from recent events," Phyllis notes, "they maintain an amazingly strong positive attitute and are grateful for what they have and for the help that they are receiving."

Red Cross registered more than 28,400 people on its family linking Wed site.
Red Cross deployed more than 900 responders to Haiti, including 165 from the American Red Cross.
